Black Mesa Project Final EIS Released; Hopi, Navajo Coal Resources Impacted



WASHINGTON, Nov. 10 - The U.S. Interior Department's Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has issued the final environmental impact statement for the proposed Black Mesa Project on Hopi and Navajo lands in northern Arizona.

The proposed project consists of Peabody Western Coal Company's operation and reclamation plans for coal mining at the Black Mesa Complex near Kayenta, Ariz. The Black Mesa Project includes both the Black Mesa Mine and the Kayenta Mine.
